Spirited Strollers counter attack almost steals T20 victory over Trundlers

Strollers vs Tetherdown Trundlers, 22 June 2022

The Strollers mounted a spirited charge to come within a whisker of pulling off a miraculous comeback against the Tetherdown Trundlers as they came within 5 runs of chasing down a monumental 203-3 in our latest T20 clash on Wednesday night.

Despite nabbing the early dismissal of Phillips, bowled by Abhik for 14, all we could do was watch in awe as the Trundler's opener Howard Clayden amassed a huge and destructive 97 with a barrage of boundaries along the way until he was finally caught in the deep by Harry off Ron, just three shy of an incredible ton. Our cause was not helped by some sloppy fielding and at least three spilled catches but we celebrated nonetheless when Stroller stalwart of old, Simon Boughey – having flown in from the US for Gav's impending Stag Weekend – making his first appearance in 3 seasons had Bonfield trapped LBW for 11.

The pleasing end to the oppo's innings meant that we carried a little momentum into our response and we got off to a flier. Yash – guesting for us from the Highgate Irregulars to keep and open the innings – immediately began taking the Trundlers apart, smashing their attack around the ground. Aided by some trademark quick running between the wickets by Ron, our opening pair piled on an opening stand of 91 in under 10 overs before Yash called for a second run that wasn't there and the Rabbit was caught short of his ground.

However, this did not deter Yash who continued to put pressure on the Trundlers, who were beginning to show their bemusement at our umpires who refused to budge on a couple of close shouts for LBW. Abhik, in at three, took a few sighters before he got going but eventually managed to find his stride until Olly Buxton castled him for a handy 23. Gav, given orders to start swinging, mistimed a heave over midwicket and was caught before troubling the scorers and Harry too was dismissed cheaply, holing out off Hayward.

Our fortunes lookedto be sealed when Yash, having made it past a well-deserved half century, was finally trapped LBW by Buxton for an excellent 78. However, despite losing a flurry of late wickets, we clung on to some hope as Gaurav took it upon himself to take us within sight of victory. Sadly though it was not to be when the Trundlers skipper Adam brought himself on and skidded one under Gaurav's bat.

In the final reckoning we ended up just 5 adrift of the Trundler's immense total – a superb effort all things considered but, as we reflected on the game over our beers after the game, we mourned those spilled chances and the leaked runs on the boundary that ultimately cost us victory. Oh well...
