Strollers vs Croxley Guild, 1 September 2024

We happily returned to winning ways this afternoon with a clean sweep for the season over the Croxley Guild as we stormed to a thumping 8 wicket victory in the return fixture out in sunny Hertfordshire.

Having won the toss on a hot late summer afternoon, the home side naturally opted to bat first only to see their openers Morris and Manners dismissed for 13 apiece with breakthroughs from Harry and a neat return catch taken by Parth. Cusack holed out to Harry to hand Spencer his first of three wickets for the day and with only 51 on the board at drinks, the oppo knew they would have to hit the gas to post a competitive total.

Number three Woodford attempted that as best he could but only made it to 20 before snicking behind to one from Davie G – making a belated but welcome return to the side for his first stroll of the season. From here on wickets tumbled apace with only Iveson making further inroads before Gaurav cleaned him out for 33 on his way to collecting a brace. With Parth also collecting a second catch off his own bowling to see off Wodsicki the oppo were finally dismissed for a modest 108. Special mention must also go to young Oliver Sturm (son of Tim) who made his Strollers début doing a fine job all afternoon protecting the deep fine leg boundary in the field.

After the break, George got straight down to business with a fearsome pull shot for four and an expansive cover drive and was cruising nicely before he was bowled by Massey, against the run of play, and trudged off for 16. Gaurav also had to make a premature exit although only to change out of his spikes which he shouldn't have been wearing on the artificial track.

This made way for Saurabh to take centre stage who mercilessly clobbered the oppo all round the park. Your writer also gladly found himself finally back in the middle after injury – if only to do a spot of umpiring – and it proved to be the best vantage point in the house as our score rattled upwards, aided by a good knock from Tim who also looked to be in fine touch.

Saurabh sadly chanced his arm one time too many and was stumped after charging down the pitch only to swing and miss to Wodsicki and was stumped just two shy of what would have been a well deserved 50.

Nonetheless, we cantered over the winning line in just the 18th over with a glorious off drive from the returning Gaurav – now adorning appropriate footwear – and, with that, we assured we would end the season with our win/ loss tally safely in the black. A very satisfying afternoon all round and we now turn our attention to the final few matches of the season. Well strolled, all!
