Highgate Irregulars CC vs Pimlico Strollers CC

Spoils shared with HICCs as rain spoils T20

Highgate Irregulars vs Tetherdown Trundlers, 17 June 2021

Rain sadly intervened to thwart our chances of a win over the Highgate Irregulars in this evening's T20 at Alexandra Palace. With gloomy conditions overhead, the match was reduced to 18 overs per side and, upon winning the toss, the oppo unsurprisingly opted to bat first and make best use of the already dim light.

With our seamers offering no quarter, the HICCs struggled to hit more than three per over in the first half of their innings and, when Harry expertly caught Ramani at deep square leg in the ninth over, we felt confident that we could restrict the oppo to a sub-100 total. Despite the loss of Agnew a couple of overs later, in the second half of their innings the Irregulars managed to find their stride with boundaries more forthcoming until their dangerman Alex Gray holed out to long off, where Viral took a vital catch.

Joe Gadsby – having forgotten his whites and therefore amusingly sporting a spare pair of Gav's – managed not to trip over his long trousers to expertly hang onto a catch at backward point off Harry to see off Gallagher. Extras – mainly comprised of wides and overthrows – gifted the HICCs no fewer than 30 runs but a much improved effort in the field overall meant that we were able to restrict the opposition to just 114-4 – a modest total which we felt confident we could beat.

Unfortunately we never got the chance to challenge as, after just three overs of our response, the skies opened and, with the downpour showing no sign of letting up, inevitably the captains agreed to call it quits, with both Kash and George unbeaten.

Thankfully the evening wasn't an entire loss as 50% of the Strollers side eagerly packed up and made a beeline for the Belash in Crouch End to enjoy a traditional post-match feast and here your writer is pleased to report we aquitted ourselves beyond all measure. Not for the first time, curry was the winner.
