Gorton's alive! It's Captain Dave

Captain Gorton

The formalities of the year drew to a close on Friday with another enjoyable AGM at The White Horse in Soho. Once again the Bucket Of Justice spoke and returned a landslide win for Dave Gorton, sworn in as skipper for the 2019 season. Though absent in India, Abhik Ghosh similary won by a convincing margin to be voted Vice Captain for the year ahead. Congratulations and good luck to both!

Congratulations also go to the winners of our annual awards:

Stroller Of The Year: Spencer Fowler (393 runs, 16 wickets)
Batsman Of The Year: Harsh Joshi (573 runs at 47.75)
Bowler Of The Year: Viral Doshi (11 wickets at 15.36)
Newcomer Of The Year: Gaurav Jain (342 runs, 7 wickets)

The 'champagne moment' of the year was a three-way run off between Harsh and Spencer's record breaking stand of 269 in our win over the HICCs, The Cat and The Kitten's remarkable turnaround against the Bohos, and Ron Boundary's physics-defying knock of 89 not out to somehow secure victory over Acme back in July.

Finally, congratulations and huge thanks must go our outgoing skipper George 'Mad Dog' Brown for helming one of the most successful seasons in Strollers history. Stroll on!

Sean Garvey: 1959-2018

Sean Garvey

For those who aren't already aware, it is with great sadness we have to report the passing of our good friend and team mate Sean Garvey.

As some considerable time has passed since we were last in contact the news only filtered through recently that Sean sadly died in his sleep back in June this year. Whilst it had been several years since we last saw Sean in cricketing action, he is fondly remembered by those who knew him, as evidenced by the many messages exchanged by numerous Strollers upon hearing the news.

As a veteran of our tours to Estonia and Benidorm Sean made his mark whenever he turned out for us and, in cricketing terms, perhaps his finest hour came when he hit the winning runs for the 'Strollers Of The Noughties' in our closely contested 20th anniversary inter-club match in 2009.

Of the many memories that have flooded in over the past 24 hours or so, perhaps Dickie's words sum up our collective feelings best: "Sean was a thoroughly entertaining player and true old school Stroller. The cricket wasn't the main thing – he was looking for fellowship. The absurdity. Ludicrous tours. A creator of chaos, and a memorable tourist. On form he was fabulous, theatrical, infectious unpredictable and – this for me was the key – completely original."

Rest in peace, Sean and we send our deepest condolances to your friends and family. From your dear friends, the Strollers.

Final fixture falls foul of the weather
posted: September 23, 2018

Sadly but inevitably today's final fixture of the season away to Hawridge & Cholesbury has been cancelled due to heavy and persistent rain. On a happier note that means we find ourselves ending the season well in credit, winning 14 of our 23 games having been joined along the way by several splendid new Strollers. Watch this space for news of our end-of-year AGM, details of which will follow in due course.

Strollers against the London Erratics, 9 September 2018

After the Beamers cried off due to dwindling numbers, the London Erratics thankfully were able to step in as oppo for this afternoon at Alexandra Palace – gladly so given our fixture against them a couple of weeks earlier had fallen foul of wet weather. Even better we happily secured a third win on the bounce, the margin of victory being a convincing 76 runs.

Strollers against the Archway Ladder, 2 September 2018

Our unbeaten streak continued yesterday afternoon with a good win away to the Archway Ladder XI in the lush surroundings of Old Owens Sports Ground. However despite most of our batsmen making good starts, nobody had been able to capitalise and our total of 186 felt a tad modest. Thankfully our bowlers turned in a fine display with the newly re-nicknamed 'Spincer' claiming magnificent figures of 4-39 on the way to dismissing the oppo for just 125, securing a 61 run victory.

Strollers against the Battersea Bohemians, 19 August 2018

Fingernails were bitten down to the knuckles, nerves were frayed, bums were squeaking but, in the end, the eruption of cheers from the boundary told onlookers all they needed to know… that the Stollers had stolen what looked like a highly improbable victory over old foes the Battersea Bohemians this afternoon at Crouch End CC.

The win was almost entirely down to a magnificent 79 run 8th wicket stand between Matt ‘The Cat’ Morgan (44) and his feline counterpart Dave ‘The Kitten’ Couldrey (43) who between them took us to within a whisker of the winning post.

Strollers at Chippenham, 12 August 2018

On an afternoon in which fortunes oscillated from one side to the other, the spoils were ultimately shared in this year's trek to the charming surroundings of Chippenham. Having reduced the oppo to 174-6 – thanks largely to an impressive spell of 3-19 from Harry – we made a fine start in our response with an opening stand of 105 between Harsh (56) and Gav (42). However, with the dismissals of our openers, we suffered an alarming collapse to 151-8. Thankfully though we managed to avoid a potentially embarassing defeat as Harry batted sensibly to hang on for the draw!

Record breakers Spencer and Harsh, 5 August 2018

Records tumbled on both sides this afternoon when we hung on and, with huge relief, won a 600 run thriller over the Highgate Irregulars. The HICCs somehow managed to get to within a whisker of completing the unlikeliest of comebacks in response to our mammoth 306-4.

However it was the record-breaking efforts of Spencer and Harsh – between them carding a record stand of 269 with Joshi notching up an all-time Strollers best score of 157 not out – along with a truly stunning over from Fowler late on, which included three key wickets, that decisively swung the game our way to secure a narrow 10 run win that will live long in the memory. Railway Taverners v Pimlico Strollers, 1 August 2018

We happily rounded off our T20 season with a tantilisingly tight win last night over the Railway Taverners at Alexandra Palace. Having posted a more-or-less par 145 all out (mainly thanks again to Gaurav who hit a fine 56) we bowled and fielded well, with Ron particularly sharp with two direct hits resulting in crucial run outs. The oppo kept going and got close but we happily held our nerve and, in near darkness, left the pitch having secured a narrow 8 run win!

Battersea Bohemians v Pimlico Strollers, 25 July 2018

After the disappointment of Sunday’s result at Sandon, we thankfully got back to winning ways last night in our latest T20 clash with a thumping 64 run win over the Battersea Bohemians. We piled on a massive 204-2, thanks mainly to 70s from Spencer (pictured right) and Gaurav which we followed up with a clinical bowling display that included figures of 4-25 for skipper Dave Gorton. An excellent effort from all concerned. Read all about it!

Sandon secure big win in latest battle of the Strollers

Sandon Strollers v Pimlico Strollers, 22 July 2018

A record-breaking Strollers opening stand of 178 was the deciding factor this afternoon... unfortunately for us the runs came for the Sandon variety of Strollers as we slumped to an 8 wicket defeat, handing our Hertfordshire namesakes their first win against us in nine years.

Earlier in the day, having won the toss, we only managed to post a modest 200 with wickets falling all too regularly on a pitch that offered variable bounce and in the face of a clearly re-energised attack – Sandon seamer Atkins collecting 6-78 along the way.

Only Abhik made significant runs on our behalf – a well-earned half century of 52 – though he was well supported by Vidur Gupta who hit 37 on début. However this was dwarfed by the efforts of Sandon skipper Simeon Green whose mighty 115 in response was undoubtedly the deciding factor in his side's march to victory, supported too by his opening partner 'Ammo' Singh who carried his bat on 54 as Sandon cruised to an easy win with nine overs remaining in the day.

Chesham Bois v Strollers, 15 July 2018

With a good away win over Chesham Bois this afternoon we happily put our results for the season back into credit. Having won the toss we posted a substantial 249 with contributions throughout the top order and a fine 64 from Ron. However Chesham gave us a scare with former Stroller David 'De Dazzler' Haines cashing in with a fine (if not chanceless) ton although, in the end, we thankfully held our nerve and saw out a 34 run win.

Beamers T20 clash cancelled

Owing to that rarest of occasions – namely England's participation in a World Cup semi final (woohoo!) – our midweek T20 clash has been cancelled so we can (hopefully) enjoy this once in a generation event, when the Three Lions take on Croatia in Moscow. The outcome of that match may also determine our prospects of play in this Sunday's scheduled away fixture at Chesham Bois. Watch this space for further updates.

Chancellors courtiers claim narrow win over Strollers at Old Cholms
posted: July 8, 2018

Our season of mixed fortunes took another twist this afternoon as we were narrowly beaten by touring side from Edinburgh, Chancellors Court. Having won the toss on yet another sweltering hot afternoon at Old Cholmeleians, George obviously opted to bat first. However early inroads and a faltering middle order looked to cost us dear until the ship was steadied later on by Kashif – who hit a stylish and unbeaten 65, well supported by Tom who hit 38. In the end we posted 229-8... a respectable score by any measure but not bullet-proof.

So it proved to be as the Chancellors' batsmen got stuck in with fifties apiece for Fursdon and Coles. We stuck at it with Tim deputising well behind the stumps (in the Kitten's enforced absence) to claim two well taken victims and we pushed the oppo all the way until the final over when, with just three balls to spare, they managed to edge over the winning line. So, back to parity then for the season's results tally but plenty more opportunities await to get us back into the black.

Strollers seal first T20 win over Archway Ladder at Ally Pally
posted: July 5, 2018

Our winning form continued last night with a first T20 win over the Archway Ladder XI at Alexandra Palace. However, having won the toss, we faltered to start losing three early wickets before the scene was set for Sid whose audacious strokeplay – consisting of numerous reverse paddle sweeps and ramp shots – earned him a stunning 83. Tom also got into the act with a typically assertive and unbeaten knock of 52. This allowed us to post a competitive 167.

In response the Archway Ladder suffered something of a collapse, losing four wickets in the first five overs. They mounted a recovery of sorts but our bowlers remained on top throughout, with threefers collected both by skipper Abhik (3-14) and young Danny Betts (3-26). With victory beyond the Ladder's reach, Sid entertained by changing his action mid over to left arm spin, turning one square to bamboozle Goodman entirely. Abhik concluded the evening's frivolities with the last wicket to fall, that of Walsh, and the Ladder fell some 30 runs adrift of their target. Well played all!

HICCs v Strollers, 19 June 2018

Possibly inspired by England's world record-breaking exploits earlier in the day, yesterday evening we posted our highest ever T20 score – a massive 217-5 –when we took on the HICCs at North Middlesex CC. It was enough to get us over the line and secure our first T20 victory of the season by, my word, did they give us a scare.

Strollers beat Bricklayers to restore parity

In a game overshadowed by an horrific season-ending injury unfortunately sustained by opposition batsman Simon English, we more happily overcame the 227 target set to us by the Bricklayers Arms to secure our fourth win of the season. Strollers make it three with a great win over Agricola
posted: June 10, 2018

The Strollers' recorded another excellent win this afternoon when we once again took on the highly amiable Agricola CC, this time on their turf at King's House in Chiswick. With Davie G officiating for the first time, he immediately proved himself as an excellent tosser when he called correctly and opted to bat first in hot, sunny conditions. Unfortunately early wickets tumbled once again and with three down with only 25 on the board our prospects looked grim. However a defiant fifth wicket stand between Sid (48) and Harsh (51) got us back into the game and we ended up posting 214-8 – a respectable score on a big pitch and in the face of a much-improved Agricola attack.

We still had work to do when we took to the field and the oppo openers batted sensibly and well to mount an opening stand of 60, which would have become more of a concern had Viral not made the vital first breakthrough to trap Almond for 25. He was to be their top scorer and from then on wickets tumbled regularly, Doshi bowling at his fearsome fastest this year on his way to a well earned 3-18. The remaining wickets were shared around the attack, Sid notably getting in on the act with his leg spin also climing a threefer, thanks in part to another sharp catch by Gav at first slip. In the end Agricola, a man or two short, were cleaned up for precisely 100... over a hundred adrift of their target, and we repaired to the pavillion to sink some beers and reflect on a job thoroughly well done.

Ten man Strollers turn tables with huge win at Chipperfield
posted: June 3, 2018

323-5 at Chipperfield

Having been roundly thrashed at Chipperfield a year ago, this afternoon we secured a huge reversal of fortunes, sealing a massive 229 run away win at their beautiful ground in west Herts. Having oddly been put in on a flat track on a hot sunny afternoon, we posted an immense 323-5 (possibly a Strollers record, we'll have to check – Ed) thanks to 49 from Ron, a lusty 40 not out from Viral and unbeaten half centuries from Nick and Gourav – both required to retire upon reaching 50.

In response the weakened Chipperfield lineup (in comparison to last year's XI) were skittled for 94 with only the Hogan brothers mounting any kind of resistance, both dismissed in their twenties. Our attack was ruthless, spearheaded by Tom 'Bowler' Harvey who collected a fine 3-27 from his spell of fast seam. An excellent performance all round and one that brings balance to this fine fixture. Hopefully we can do do it again next year!

Too few runs costs us in season's first T20
posted: May 30, 2018

Unfortunately we failed to get this season's T20 campaign off to a winning start when we took on the Battersea Bohemians at North Middlesex CC this evening. With gloomy conditions overhead, the match was reduced to 18 overs per side. However, having won the toss we committed the cardinal sin of failing to bat out our overs as, despite decent starts from Nick (29) and Viral (21), a collapse towards the end meant that we could only stumble to 104 before being skittled out.

In response we bowled and fielded sharply, claiming 5 well-taken wickets to dismiss some of the Bohos' bigger hitters along the way. Sadly however we never had enough of a total to defend and the oppo cantered home with 4 overs to spare.

Strollers see off HICCs to seal first win of the season
posted: May 28, 2018

We finally recorded our first win of the season yesterday with a great all round team effort to beat the Highgate Irregulars. Having been sent in we posted a competitive 233-8 thanks to some excellent contributions from the middle order led by Abhik who hit a superb 69. This was followed up by an exemplary display in the field with wickets shared across our attack, including a fine 3-27 for Dave Gorton. Read all about it!

Strollers toil and slip to defeat to the Taverners
posted: May 20, 2018

Abhik in action against the Highgate Taverners

Unfortunately we notched up a third heavy loss on the spin this afternoon with a 9 wicket defeat away to the Highgate Taverners. Winning his first toss of the year, George opted to bat first on another hot and sunny afternoon in the delightful settings of Totteridge CC but whilst several of our batsmen made promising starts – best of all 30 from débutant Sid Dubey – none were able to capitalise with a big score. As such we were bowled out for a modest 160.

That never looked enough in a 40 over match and nor did it prove to be as the oppo's batsmen cashed in with some clean and strong striking – both openers notching up half centuries until, on 127, Sid made the first and only breakthrough to trap Danos for 53. But it was too little too late and the Taverners cruised to an easy victory with 19 overs to spare. The search for a first win of 2018 continues...

Strollers suffer Shakespearean tragedy with another heavy defeat at Ferme Park
posted: May 13, 2018

Sam takes on the Shakespeare XI

Faced with a much changed team compared with the Shakespeare XI that we soundly defeated last season, the tables were well and truly turned today at Ferme Park when we were roundly trounced by a whopping 222 run margin.

As with last week's match, the oppo capitalised on the spongy surface and short boundaries to notch up an immense 345-4, to which we could only stumble to 123 in response. The highlight of the afternoon was the happy re-appearance of Simon 'SiBo' Boughey who had crossed the Atlantic to play ...only to pick up a nasty blow to the shin off his own bowling as his reward in addition to a single wicket. Not a great day at the office then, better things will surely come as we search for our first win of the season.

Bohos make hay whilst the sun shines to see off Strollers in opening clash
posted: May 6, 2018

Not even a spectacular and unbeaten 135 and a thoroughly well-deserved three-fer earlier in the afternoon from Guy Grainger – kindly guesting for us from the Tetherdown Trundlers – was enough to take us to victory against old foes the Battersea Bohemians today at Ferme Park.

After the long winter months the glorious weather with temperatures approaching 30ºC was something of a shock to the system for our long-overdue first match of the season. Upon losing the toss we were sent out to field first and, after an attritional start, with only a limited attack at our disposal we could only look on on as the Bohos piled on the runs, including a whopping 176 not out from John Hiddleston – who made the most of a tiny legside boundary with six after six.

In the end the Bohemians posted a massive 295-5 which, despite our best efforts, was simply beyond out reach and we closed some 56 runs adrift.

Sun sets on super season sadly without win at Hawridge & Cholesbury
posted: September 24, 2017

Hawridge & Cholesbury CC

Sadly we couldn't close out the season with a 10th win today at Hawridge & Cholesbury and our search of a victory in the beautiful Buckinghamshire village continues. However we made a good start with an excellent effort in the field restricting the oppo to 187-4 off their 40 overs, thanks to good spells from all our seamers.

However the good work was undone somewhat by our batting display – whilst Harsh made a typically terrific 78, some near-suicidal shot selection cost us too many wickets and the less dwelt upon Tim's ugly run out the better. In the end we came up short by 40 runs ...a rather disappointing end to what has in so many other respects been a classic season.

Harsh in action at Broken Wicket

Yesterday saw our first foray as participants in the Broken Wicket one day tournament, an annual end-of-season shindig hosted by our friends the Archway Ladder at North Middlesex CC.

Whilst we sadly couldn't register a win – having been thoroughly outplayed by oppos the George Orwell XI and the Archway Ladder – it was a fun day nonetheless. Thanks especially to Dave Osborn, Tony Mitchell and Yash Singh who kindly guested for us from the HICCs to ensure we had a good squad at our disposal. Let's hope for better luck next time!

Honours even as rain besets run chase against Beamers

Abhik takes the attack to the Beamers

Persistant rain in the latter part of a distinctly autumnal afternoon at Ferme Park ensured that honours were shared in today's clash with the Beamers. Having put them in on a sluggish pitch our early breakthroughs were unfortunately offset by some lamentable fielding – four shelled catches and an ungiven LBW allowing Richard Verity to post an unbeaten 111 as the oppo piled on an imposing 241-4 from their 30 overs.

Nonetheless, after tea, we responded well with explosive knocks from Abhik (47 not out), Gav (40) and Viral (unbeaten on 21) keeping us in the hunt for a tenth successive win on the trot. Unfortunately as the match approached it's climax the rain set in and it was decided the only sensible option was to return to the pavilion and call it a draw. Happily however our unbeaten run remains intact! Full match report to follow in due course.

Nick takes on the Erratics

We secured our ninth (yes, ninth!) consecutive win of the season yesterday against the London Erratics on a glorious Bank Holiday Sunday on the main pitch at NLCC. Making the most of the fine conditions on winning the toss we batted first and cashed in with contributions all the way down the scorecard including a superb 67 from Nick (pictured) and an unbeaten 78 from the Kitten.

In response, the Erratics never really managed to meet the required rate and, with an excellent 3-33 for the returning Mickey Leighton, we were able to secure a convincing 90 run victory.

The format is that two groups of three teams each will contest a round robin of 10 over-per-side matches before semi-finals and play-offs later in the day. Spencer takes on the Bohos

Records tumbled this afternoon as, in the same game, Spencer became the first Stroller in history to reach both 200 wickets and 5,000 runs!

Insodoing he helped us make it a magnificent eight wins on the bounce and bring the season's results to parity as we thrashed our favourite foes the Battersea Bohemians by a thumping 145 run margin.

Fowler backed up his fine 53 with a match-winning five-for, which included a stunning low catch from Gav at second slip that notched up the Spengali General's 200th wicket. Other noteworthy contributions came from Harsh, unbeaten on 30, and the skipper – Viral following up a typically explosive cameo with the bat with four wickets of his own. All in all a more decisive win you will never see!

In a game replete with highlights ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous it was thanks to fine fifties from Harsh (52), Viral (54*) and a man-of-the-match showing from Tom, unbeaten on 81 (following an excellent threefer earlier in the day), that meant we thrillingly chased down our 212 target in the final over of the day.

Chesham Bois CC

Our fine form continued this afternoon with a sixth win on the bounce against Chesham Bois CC — new opposition introduced to us by none other than sometime Stroller David 'De Dazzler' Haines who now skippers the Buckinghamshire side.

Having been sent out to field we restricted Chesham to 196-8 thanks to a great all-round bowling effort which included a fine 3-41 from Abhik. Our response saw contributions all the way down the order, the highlight being an unbeaten man-of-the-match-winning knock of 57 not out from Tim. In the end we marched over the winning line in the 32nd over to notch up a highly satisfying 6 wicket win.

Despite posting a mammoth 270-7 — including 71 from Spencer, 55 from the kitten and 49 apiece for Abhik and Viral — we were pushed all the way today by a decidedly youthful Theydon Bois XI whose U14 opener Miller hit a mighty 128 that threatened to take the game away from us before he was crucially caught by Gav at fly slip. In the end, thanks to a merciless spell from Viral (who took 4-51), we were able to dismiss the oppo just twelve runs shy of their target and, in the process, notch up a hat-trick of wins within the week!

Strollers close season just shy of victory
posted: September 25, 2016

Hawridge & Cholesbury CCIt was a case of close but no cigar today as, despite our best efforts to end the season on a high, we failed to get over the line in our final match away to Hawridge & Cholesbury. Having won the toss and opted to field first our seam attack bowled superbly, taking full advantage of the variable conditions. However, whilst the breakthroughs came, chances were also spilled in the field allowing the oppo to post 170 ...perhaps some 20 runs more than they deserved. That said, the four catches that were taken (two by the skipper and two by Tim) were all excellent with Sturm's dismissal of Shead taken in the deep a genuine contender for catch of the season!

After a simply superb tea (hands down best of the year — Ed) our top order struggled and were sent packing cheaply. However Tim and Dave applied themselves well and steadied the innings. With around a hundred required after drinks we felt the win was there for the taking, however thrifty spells from Shead and skipper Rutt stemmed the runs. Tim, on 44, was unlucky not to hit a fifty before he let one through the gate. Dave however did notch up a fine half century and with consistently stylish strokeplay kept us in the hunt. However with the field set deep and the outfield sluggish from earlier rain, boundaries were at a premium and by the final over we required 17 to win. Our hopes were thwarted when Dave was somewhat controversially run out on 67 (some debate centered around whether the batsmen had crossed) and, with Dickie only able to pinch a single from the penultimate ball, victory for the home side was assured.

Nevertheless it had been an exciting game played in an excellent spirit and truly beautiful surroundings. As with several games this season we were near but yet so far...

Sub-par total costs us as Bohos beat Strollers
posted: September 18, 2016

North London CCFor the third match in a row we were unfortunately unable to defend a modest total in today's late season clash with the Battersea Bohemians at North London CC. Having been put in on a spongy green-top wicket we were frustrated as several of our batsmen made good starts but were unable to capitalise — the order of the day seemingly requiring catches to be regularly served up to the oppo waiting in the deep, who happily took what was offered. Only Tom looked likely to score heavily although he too sadly succumbed on 33 to Rob's stock loopy arm ball. In the end we were dismissed for 170 which, even considering the heavy outfield, felt a tad meagre.

Nevertheless, after a surprisingly good tea which included the very welcome return of fruit scones to the trolley (take note, Si — Ed), our hopes were raised with the early run out of Ball, thanks to the first of several lightning returns from Toby who menacingly prowled at midwicket. However those hopes were promptly dashed as Viral was unlucky to shell the chance of a sharp return catch from the dangerous looking Monson, who subsequently marched on to record a measured fifty. However our bowlers stuck to their task well and Jonny, brought on to take over from Abhik, eventually took the prize wicket of young Tom who swung, missed and was promptly stumped by Davey.

With the Bohos requiring a further sixty-odd, we still felt there was still something of a chance and Toby, when brought on from the pavilion end, caused the oppo's batsmen all kinds of headaches with his late inswingers. However Leece and Spratt hung in and, taking advantage of some looser stuff from the other end, managed to march on, the latter notiching up a fifty himself as the Bohos eased to their target in the thirtieth over. However it was far from an abject display and we reflected afterwards that even just one decent knock from one of our batsmen might have made given the Bohos a challenge in chasing us down. And from several Strollers, that big knock feels just around the corner ...just a shame that we now may have to wait until next season to see it!

Beamers breeze past Strollers at sunny Ferme Park
posted: September 11, 2016

The Beamers unfortunately bested us this afternoon as once again we were unable to defend a slightly sub-par total at Ferme Park. In unseasonably hot and sunny weather we opted to bat first upon winning the toss and despite the loss of Gav early on (the skipper bafflingly fishing at a wide to nick behind), we made a decent start with George and Henry taking us over the hundred without incident. However, on the stroke of our reaching three figures, Henry was bowled for 30 through the gate before making way for Tim who quickly settled into a good rhythm and began amassing runs with some powerful strokes through the leg side.

However, after George departed for 45 — having been sharply caught and bowled by Wood — the runs dried up for a while with Ron and Sam dismissed cheaply and, as the overs ticked by, there was some concern we might not reach the 200 mark. Nonetheless Tim persisted and notched up a fine fifty before some devastating strokeplay late on from Dave revived our hopes as the kitten smashed a succession of immense sixes as our innings drew to a close to finish on a respectable 231-7, albeit a slightly modest total on the small Ferme Park pitch.

In response the Beamers went about their business at a steady pace although Harry did manage to trap Satish LBW early in their reply. However oppo skipper Al Dixon looked minded to do the heavy lifting and, having seen off a probing early spell from Simon, began to score at pace once the second string attack was introduced. Sam collected the wicket of Don just before drinks, thanks to sharp glovework from Davey behind but, after the break, the opposition's batsmen hit the accelerator, cashing in on loose deliveries as Dixon marched on to record a well deserved ton. Dave's stumping of Andrew off Ron's bowling was to be our final breakthrough before the Beamers romped to their target with five overs to spare.

Tetherdown trundle past Strollers to seal victory
posted: September 5, 2016

We unfortunately came up second best in our hastily arranged extra fixture against the Tetherdown Trundlers yesterday. Having won the toss at a cloudy North Middlesex CC, Gav opted to bat first. However, despite good starts from several of our batsmen (including débutant Toby Culham), we were only able to post a somewhat under par 170 ...this largely thanks to a lusty 33 from Sam Adamson who, supported by Bruce — the founding Stroller himself making a very welcome return to the side after a 2 year absence — was able to mount a rearguard action that ensured we had something to bowl at.

However, despite the early removal of Trundlers skipper Frais and number three Bowfield, thanks to two well taken catches by Abhik and the Count, we were unable to make further inroads. With Colley and Phillips sharing an unbeaten 100+ 3rd wicket stand the opposition trundled over the winning line in the 28th over. Nevertheless it was great to get the additional game in and even better to see a refreshing combination of new faces and Strollers masters of old sharing the field.

Strollers steal the headlines to snatch win from the Sunday Times
posted: August 22, 2016

Dulwich Sports GroundA simply stunning 62 from Abhik stole an unlikely (and newsworthy) win over the Sunday Times Occasionals yesterday afternoon at Dulwich Sports Ground. Having put the oppo in to bat on a greenish wicket with variable bounce we restricted them to 198 from their 40 overs, although it could have been significantly less had we held onto several spilled catches. Thankfully though, good spells from Ron and Abhik himself managed to stem the runs and keep the target just beneath 200.

However any advantage we thought we had quickly dissipated as we again shed early wickets and, whilst several of our middle order batsmen made decent starts, none dominated the probing Sunday Times bowlers who collected wickets with regularity. With 7 down as we notched up our 100, any hopes of victory seemed to be lost.

However Abhik, joined by Gideon, knuckled down and ground out the beginnings of a rearguard action before he felt ready to open his shoulders and struck a series of searing boundaries that put the oppo on the back foot. After notching up his maiden Strollers half century, Abhik was very unlucky to end up stumped out by a rebounding ball off the keeper. Happily, despite the frayed nerves of those looking on from the boundary, Ronak cemented his role as finisher as he and Gideon safely steered us to our target in the 36th over, so seizing victory from the jaws of defeat. A magnificent win, worthy of the headlines!

Chippenham steal win from Strollers in stunning low scorer
posted: August 15, 2016

Chippenham CCBowlers dominated in our annual away clash with Chippenham yesterday which ended in frustration when, having celebrated the rare achievement of dismissing the oppo cheaply for a modest 123, we conceded what at tea had looked like a nailed on win.

Our bowlers had set us up for a precious victory with a miserly opening spell from Simon (who collected 2 for just 10 off 8 overs) and an astonishing 4-28 from Sam. However, when Chippenham 1st eleveners Sean Ward and Andy Holmes demolished our top order, our celebrations looked premature and despite good resistance from Tom (22) and Harry (24) we were skittled for just 95. An excellent game nonetheless although our search for our first win at Chippers in over a decade continues...

Bohemians batter Strollers to secure easy win
posted: August 7, 2016

Calthorpe CCOur recent winning streak sadly came to an end this afternoon at Calthorpe CC where a hybrid side comprised of Strollers and — due to numerous holiday absences on our part — guesting Highgate Irregulars were well beaten by the in-form batsmen of the Battersea Bohemians.

Having won the toss on a hot, sunny afternoon Gav predictably opted to bat first. However, despite another fine knock of 68 by Tony, supported by a solid 32 from the skipper, we were only able to post a modest 212 from our 40 overs.

With only limited bowling options at our disposal, the Bohos cashed in and battered their way with ease to their target, their only loss being that of Josh Jones who, with the score on 49, was sharply caught by Gav at gully. However, from then on, unfortunately it was all one way traffic led by young Tom Monson who recorded a fine century just before the Bohemians romped over the winning line in the 26th over.

Strollers survive late scares to seal close win over Agricola in a thriller
posted: July 31, 2016

This afternoon we secured a hat trick of three successive wins with victory over our new(ish) friends Agricola but, boy, was it a close thing!

A fine bowling display restricted oppo Agricola to a sub-200 score, with wickets shared all round. Skipper Gav got us off to a flier with a searing 66 but a flurry of late wickets put us in danger of falling short. However an invaluable and unbeaten 36 from Tom thankfully carried us over the winning line to seal a thrilling 2 wicket win.

Taverners trumped by stunning Strollers in final T20
posted: July 28, 2016

We recorded two T20 wins on the bounce yesterday evening with a resounding 8 wicket victory over the Railway Taverners. With the match reduced to 18 overs per side in humid cloudy conditions at North Middlesex CC, we lost the toss but subsequently fielded superbly. Wickets fell regularly as we held onto our catches including stunning takes pouched by Abhik, Matt and Dave G, who notched up another contender for catch of the season when he held onto a lobbed half chance to backward point off Simon's final over — placating our tardy strike bowler somewhat, who had infuriatingly missed the first ten overs of the match due to heavy traffic.

However the real star of the show was Paul who, constantly tempting the Tavs' batsmen into playing false shots, collected a fantastic 5 for just 17. Paul's haul was probably the main factor in restricting the oppo to a meagre 127-8, although credit must go to the whole side for another fine effort in the field.

In response, aside from the early loss of Dave, our chase looked much like a formality. Gav got the innings underway well with a series of powerful offside shots before Tony Mitchell, guesting from the HICCs, hit his stride and began pummeling the ball to all parts. Gav was unlucky to play on to one that straightened from Powells, but made way for Matt who was happy to play a supporting role to Tony who powered his way firstly to an untroubled fifty. From there on Tony chanced his arm rather more and was fortunate to see a couple of looped leading edges go down but he deserved is luck and, as we romped over the winning line in the 17th over, he closed on a wonderful unbeaten 74, Matt also finishing not out on 18.

Whilst not quite the nail biter of last week's scenes, the win was no less satisfying and we walked off victorious to finish this season's T20 campaign on a high.

Thrilling climax as Strollers seal T20 triumph over Bohos
posted: July 21, 2016

Bohemians vs Strollers (20 July 2016)The relief was palpable last night in sweltering conditions at North Middlesex CC where we notched up our first T20 win of the season in an absolute thriller against the Battersea Bohemians, with the tiniest possible margin of victory — a single run! Batting first we only managed to post a modest 129-8 from our allotted overs, helped largely by a solid rearguard action led by Tom Harvey who hit a vital 32.

However, we once again fielded superbly and with Viral and Kashif leading the charge with a blistering opening spell that claimed four early wickets we had the Bohos rocking back on their heels. A powerful knock from McCaskill brought the oppo back into the game, though, and with just three runs required for victory with one over to go, it seemed likely that our fine efforts would sadly end in vain. However a miserly final over from Spencer cost us only a single wide and, when Botterill was run out on the last ball of the match, the closely set field erupted in celebration as we snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Incredible stuff!

Beamers get the better of Strollers batsmen in latest T20
posted: July 15, 2016

Our batsmen were left wanting in our latest T20 clash last night against the Beamers at North Middlesex CC, despite another fine performance in the field. On winning the toss we sent the oppo in and, with numerous bowling options at Gav's disposal, we did a fine job of maintaining pressure throughout the Beamers' innings with a combination of sharp fielding and frequent wickets shared around the attack, led by Tom who, with his lightning caught and bowled dismissal of captain Kyle Pittman for a rare duck, collected a bruising 3-22.

Having restricted the Beamers to 149-8 (a very gettable total) our optomism at the turnaround was short lived with the early losses of George, Spencer and Kashif. Dave, Gav and débutant Abhik steadied the ship somewhat but, in the face of a swinging and turning ball, we were never able to dominate the attack and each fell before they really got started. In the end we limped our way to 99 when, on the last ball of the match, Jonny finally fell. A rather disappointing result although credit must go to the Beamers attack who offered us nothing. The mood was improved by a long overdue post match return to the Belash Indian restaurant — a Strollers favourite — for a consolatory curry.

Whilst we couldn't quite claim victory, there were numerous highlights in our drawn match away to Sandon yesterday — from our top four who each batted superbly to retire on unbeaten fifties apiece, to a superb display in the field boasting four fabulous catches. Whilst the oppo ended their innings over a hundred runs adrift of the imposing target of 257 we had set them, we sadly couldn't whittle out the final three wickets to nab the win ...but it certainly wasn't for want of trying. Well played all!

Strollers suffer chastening defeat as HICCs chase down mammoth total
posted: June 23, 2016

A sense of bemused bewilderment settled upon the Strollers yesterday evening after, in our latest T20 clash at North Middlsex CC, the side somehow contrived to lose to the Highgate Irregulars having posted a record 196-3 from our allotted overs. Not only did the oppo successfully chase down the mammoth target but they did so without the loss of a single wicket, a truly chastening experience for all concerned.

Archway successfully climb long ladder to see off Strollers
posted: June 16, 2016

Sadly not even a spectacular 90 from Dave 'The Kitten' Couldrey could save us from defeat to the Archway Ladder at Alexandra Palace last night. With the help of Tim, who hit a fine 40 before snicking one behind, we were able to post an impressive 177-5 from our 20 overs, with Couldrey lofting the ball to all corners with seemingly evermore ease.

However with only six regular Strollers in our line-up, augmented by Yogesh — guesting from the Hiccs — and a couple of surplus players kindly donated by the oppo, we were unfortunately unable to assert ourselves in the field as the large gaps were found all too frequently. Nevertheless, Sam impressed with his economy and Shani shone with a sharp spell that probed the Archway batsmen's nerve. But with Patel hitting an unbeaten fifty and the rest of the Archway top and middle order cashing in at the expense of an under-strength bowling attack, we finally were beaten after 17 overs. A good game nonetheless and our thanks must go to the opposition for sportingly helping us to get the game on.

Bohos T20 a wash out

RainMonsoon season claimed another victim as flash flooding at the North Middlesex CC pitch meant our midweek T20 clash against the Battersea Bohemians this evening had to be called off.

Our next match will now be another T20 on the evening of Wednesday 15 June against the Archway Ladder CC at Alexandra Palace Park. If you would like to make yourself available, please email Gav.

George grabs the glory with brilliant ton to beat Bricklayers
posted: June 5, 2016

George's tonRecords fell as we recorded a huge 210 run win over the Bricklayers Arms at Ferme Park today. So many highlights to note including a personal best knock of 93 from Tim and a well executed first five-for from Kashif but, chief amongst all, was George's maiden ton as he carried his bat with an unbeaten 103 not out.

Wet weather puts paid to HICCs clash
posted: June 1, 2016

RainWet and unseasonably wintery weather accounted for the cancellation of yet another match — this evening's T20 against the Highgate Irregulars at Highgate CC. However the side gamely trooped down to Lord's for an indoor net session instead and much fun it was.

Our next matches will be this Sunday 5 June against the Bricklayers Arms, followed by another T20 next Wednesday 8 June against the Battersea Bohemians. If you would like to make yourself available for either match or any beyond, please email Gav.

T18 against the Bohos ends in thrilling tie
posted: May 26, 2016

Last night's clash with the Battersea Bohemians could not have been any closer! With the match reduced to 18 overs a side due to the dark clouds overhead, the oppo chose to bat first and, thanks to a well organised effort from the Strollers in the field, were restricted to just 129-5. Worth remembering also that, in his final over, Ron collected two wickets in his last two balls meaning he will carry over for a potential hat-trick in his next game!

We mounted a spirited response although the Boho's fielding was similarly tight and, with the controversial run out of Tim, they looked to be edging on top. However Somanka kept his nerve and nudged and nurdled his way to a splendid first 50 for the Strollers and, with 6 needed from the final 6 balls we looked to be almost home. However a miserly final over from Tom Whyte restricted us and he when posted the entire field (wicketkeeper included) to the boundary for the final ball all we could do was run a well timed two to clinch a thrilling tie. A great game in all and, after so many early season false starts, even better to finally be cricketing again!

Extra fixture at Edmonton ends in defeat
posted: May 9, 2016

With both skipper and vice skipper away on operations overseas, George 'Mad Dog' Brown kindly took it upon himself to organise an extra (originally unplanned) excursion to play Edmonton CC 4th XI yesterday. Unfortunately, with a team numbering only 9, we were unable to record a win but put up some fight nonetheless with that man Ron Boundary claiming a threefer in an attempt to thwart the oppo's attempts to chase down the modest 130 target. Full match report to follow, in the meantime, here are the scores...

Season start postponed as Ferme Park fails to be ready for play
posted: April 20, 2016

Sadly our first planned match of the season, the traditional curtain raiser against our old foes, the Battersea Bohemians — that had been scheduled for this Sunday, 24th April — has been called off. The reason being that North London CC have not had sufficient opportunity to prepare the Ferme Park pitch and the outfield is sadly unplayable.

Our first outing of the year will therefore be our away fixture on Sunday, 15th May against the Highgate Irregulars. If you would like to make yourself available, please email Gav as soon as possible.
